Kashmir in 5 Days: A Complete Itinerary Guide (Srinagar, Pahalgam, Gulmarg, Sonmarg & Doodhpathri)

Kashmir rewards travelers who plan around distances rather than a wish-list of names. Srinagar, Pahalgam, Gulmarg, Sonmarg and Doodhpathri are all built around a central Srinagar base, and most first-time visitors try to cover too much ground in too little time. Five days, done right, is enough to see the valley properly — this is the itinerary our team runs most often for guests flying into Srinagar or Jammu.

Day 1: Arrival & Pahalgam

Most itineraries start with an arrival transfer straight to Pahalgam (roughly 90km / 2.5–3 hours from Srinagar), so you spend the first evening near the Lidder River instead of losing the day in a hotel room. If you land in Srinagar itself, a Shikara ride on Dal Lake at sunset is the better first-evening alternative.

Day 2: The ABC Valley — Aru, Betaab & Chandanwari

This is Pahalgam's signature day. Aru Valley, Betaab Valley and Chandanwari are covered by local union cabs (a fixed requirement in this zone — private vehicles aren't permitted past a certain point), and the three together take a full day. Betaab Valley is the easiest walk; Chandanwari, at the base of the Amarnath route, is where the road ends and the trek begins.

Day 3: Gulmarg

Gulmarg is about 50km from Srinagar (1.5–2 hours), making it an easy day trip from a central base. The Gondola cableway (sold separately from most package inclusions) is the main draw for panoramic Himalayan views and, in winter, for skiing. Even without the Gondola, the meadow itself and the walk toward the golf course are worth the trip.

Day 4: Doodhpathri or Sonmarg, plus Srinagar's Old City

Doodhpathri ("valley of milk"), about 45–50km from Srinagar, is quieter and greener than Gulmarg — a good choice if you want fewer crowds. Sonmarg (80km, 2.5–3 hours) is the better pick if glacier and high-altitude scenery matter more to you than a relaxed pace. Either way, save an hour in the evening for Srinagar's Old City and Lal Chowk market for pashmina, saffron and dry fruits.

Day 5: Departure

A straightforward transfer back to Srinagar airport or onward to Jammu, depending on your arrival routing.

Best Time to Visit Kashmir

  • Spring (March–April): blooming meadows, fewer crowds, cooler weather
  • Summer (May–June): every valley is open and accessible — the safest season for a first visit
  • Autumn (September–October): the best light and views of the season, with chinar trees turning gold
  • Winter (December–February): snow across the valley and skiing at Gulmarg, but several high routes close

What This Trip Typically Costs

A 5D/4N Kashmir trip covering Pahalgam, Srinagar, Gulmarg and Yusmarg/Doodhpathri — including hotel stays, breakfast and dinner, airport transfers, a private AC vehicle, and a Shikara ride — typically runs from around ₹11,000 to ₹18,000 per person depending on group size and hotel category. Airfare, lunches, Gondola tickets, pony/ATV rides and entry tickets are usually excluded and paid on the spot.

A Few Things We Tell Every First-Time Guest

  • The ABC Valley (Aru/Betaab/Chandanwari) requires local union cabs, not your main vehicle — budget for this separately
  • Gondola tickets at Gulmarg sell out early in peak season; book the first slot if you want the upper stage
  • Carry layered clothing even in summer — evenings in Pahalgam and Sonmarg drop well below Srinagar's temperature
  • If your dates fall in winter, confirm road conditions to Sonmarg and Doodhpathri before finalizing the itinerary — both can close after heavy snowfall

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a 5 day Kashmir tour package cost?

Our 5D/4N Kashmir package (Pahalgam, Srinagar, Gulmarg and Yusmarg/Doodhpathri) typically costs ₹11,000–18,000 per person, including hotels, breakfast and dinner, airport transfers, a private AC vehicle and a Shikara ride. Airfare, lunches and Gondola tickets are extra.

How many days are enough for Kashmir?

5 days is enough to cover Srinagar, Pahalgam, Gulmarg and Sonmarg or Doodhpathri without rushing. Fewer than 4 days means dropping at least one major stop.

What is the best time to visit Kashmir?

March–June and September–October are the most reliable windows. Summer (May–June) has every valley open, while autumn (September–October) has the best light and fewer crowds. December–February brings snow but closes some routes.

Is Kashmir good for a family or first Himalayan trip?

Yes. Altitudes stay under 2,700m throughout this itinerary, travel is by private AC vehicle, and the pace is relaxed — it's one of the easiest Himalayan trips to plan for families, couples and first-timers.
